Sending a watch by courier — especially a luxury or high-value timepiece — requires extra care. With the right packaging and the right service, you can send your watch safely and with confidence.
Packaging your watch for courier delivery
Use the original box if possible
If you have the original manufacturer's box, use it. It's designed to protect the watch and provides a good base layer of cushioning. Place the box inside a larger outer shipping box with additional padding.
Without the original box
If you don't have the original box:
- Wrap the watch in soft cloth or bubble wrap — several layers for a luxury timepiece
- Place it in a small, snug box with foam or bubble wrap padding on all sides
- Put this inner box inside a larger, sturdy outer box with additional void fill
The "double box" method
For very valuable watches, use the double-box method: the inner box holds the watch with ample padding, and the outer box provides an additional layer of protection. There should be at least 5cm of cushioning material between the inner and outer boxes.
Choosing the right courier service
For a high-value watch, choose a courier that offers:
- Real-time tracking: So you always know where your watch is
- Insurance options: To cover the value of the watch in case of loss or damage
- Secure handling: Proof of delivery with signature requirement
Declaring the value
When booking, declare the true value of the watch. This ensures any insurance coverage is appropriate and protects you in the event of a claim. Underdeclaring the value can void insurance coverage.
Consider same-day delivery
For especially valuable or important watches, consider using a same-day, direct courier service. This minimises handling and transit time, reducing the risk of damage or loss.
