Expanding Delivery Zones: Deciding How Far Your Same Day Service Should Reach
By Kris Van der Bijl ·
Setting the right delivery zone is one of the most important decisions a same-day delivery business can make. Go too small and you miss customers; go too large and delivery times suffer.
Start with Your Fulfilment Location
Your delivery zone should be drawn around your warehouse, store, or fulfilment hub. The further a courier travels, the harder it is to guarantee same-day delivery — particularly for afternoon orders.
Understand Demand Density
Map where your customers actually live. High-density metropolitan areas can support wider same-day zones because couriers can complete multiple deliveries per trip. Sparse suburban or regional areas may require a tighter zone to remain viable.
Set Time-Based Boundaries
Rather than drawing a simple radius, consider time-based delivery zones. A 45-minute drive radius from your fulfilment point is often a practical starting point for same-day guarantees.
Price by Zone
Tiered pricing by delivery distance allows you to expand your reach while maintaining profitability. Customers in outer zones pay a small premium — and are often happy to do so for the convenience.
Expand Incrementally
Test new suburbs or postcodes before committing to them permanently. Run a pilot with a courier partner, measure on-time delivery rates, and only expand zones where you can consistently deliver on your same-day promise.
