Townsville to Cairns is 350km via the Bruce Highway (A1) — the reverse of the Cairns-to-Townsville run. The drive is 4–4.5 hours through Ingham, Cardwell, Tully and Innisfail before reaching the Cairns outskirts. The highway is mostly two lanes through sugar cane and tropical farming country.
