How Click-and-Collect Differs from Same-Day Delivery in Retail
By Cheryl Kahla ·
Click-and-collect and same-day delivery are both fast fulfilment options for retail customers, but they work very differently. Understanding the distinction helps retailers decide which option — or combination — works best for their business and customers.
What is click-and-collect?
Click-and-collect (also called BOPIS — Buy Online, Pick Up In Store) allows customers to order online and collect their purchase from a physical store location. The customer does the "last mile" themselves by visiting the store.
What is same-day delivery?
Same-day delivery means the retailer (or their courier partner) brings the order to the customer's specified address on the day the order is placed. The customer doesn't need to go anywhere.
Key differences
| Factor | Click-and-Collect | Same-Day Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Customer effort | Must travel to store | None — delivered to door |
| Cost to retailer | Low (no delivery cost) | Higher (courier fees) |
| Convenience for customer | Moderate (requires trip) | High (no effort needed) |
| Store visit benefit | Drives foot traffic | No additional visits |
When customers prefer click-and-collect
Click-and-collect suits customers who are already planning to be near the store, prefer to avoid delivery windows, or want to inspect items before leaving the store. It's particularly popular for larger items where home delivery would be complex.
When customers prefer same-day delivery
Same-day delivery wins when customers prioritise convenience, are unable or unwilling to visit a store, or have mobility constraints. It's often the preferred option for time-sensitive purchases where the item is needed at a specific location (home, office, event venue).
Offering both
Many successful retailers offer both options, letting customers choose based on their individual circumstances. This flexibility maximises conversions and caters to different segments of your customer base.
